These days, more than any in the past, we can relate to the axiom “There are no atheists in foxholes.” The advent of painful illness and its impact on the family circle has caused us to pray fervently and frequently.

Although we each pray in our own way, according to personal beliefs, the results are similar for all of us. Prayer brings us a sense of stability and also relieves our resentments, obsessions, and fears. By turning to God we are able to renew our hope. We are comforted by the knowledge that God is always at our side and ever-willing to protect and care for us.

Today’s difficulties will assuredly be resolved; in God’s time, the pain will pass. Peaceful days will return, and the challenges of the present will give way to joy and gratitude.

Will we then remember the rewards of prayer? Will we remember that we can find stability, hope, comfort, strength, guidance, and love not only during times of travail, but at all times?
